A New Quilt Top

I love playing around with quilt design.  Sometimes I sketch on paper if an idea strikes me and I don't have my computer around, but usually I experiment in my design program while watching TV at night (I use Quilt Canvas).  Regular practice keeps my creativity flowing, and I definitely notice a slump in my creative mojo when I haven't played with design in awhile.

Lots of times, I don't even like a design enough to save it, and other times I save it, but tweak it over time before actually turning the pattern into a quilt.  Still other times, I create a design and have to make the quilt right away.  Such was the case with this new quilt top.

I immediately loved the interesting shape of the blocks, as well as the secondary cross pattern created in the negative space, and I knew it was perfect for my Amy Butler stash (plus a few additions).  I can't wait to finish this quilt, and I am planning to release the pattern.

This one has kind of a southwestern feel, or I think the shapes look a little like ancient Egyptian scarabs, or maybe even vintage brooches.  This one needs a name, so tell me- what do you see?

  1. For some reason I see old TV sets (kind of eloganted) so I would name it High Fidelity.

  2. This is so pretty! Reminds me of a pendant that my grandmother use to wear, she called it her "Lavalier" necklace. So there you go...I'd call it Lavalier! :)

    1. That is such a pretty name and good background story for it.

  3. Looking Glass they remind me of old fashioned stand alone mirrors that were floor length so you could see your whole dress!!! Lovely quilt!

  4. Definitely some sort of Middle-eastern tile kind of design - very cool! Or, as Melody says, full length mirrors, yes.

  5. I see the tops of vintage rings, or as you said, brooches. Estate Jewels, or Treasure Chest, or Vintage Treasure, or....it definitely has that jewel look to it to me.

  6. I see mirrors! Reflections in a Mirror-just beautiful!

  7. When you said broches, I saw Cameos. LovEly pattern! You could also put focus fabrics in the frames or cameo settings.

  9. Yes, reminds me too of old-timey brooches. Old televisions also, as someone said. How about Brooch Tiles for a name?

  10. No matter where I see your quilts, I always recognize them as Kelly's as they are so distinct and individual.
And of course, very pretty and nicely done.

  11. Great quilt, Kelly! So many secondary and tertiary designs possible depending on fabric selection including, as others have said, a focus fabric somewhere in the design. If turned 90-degrees it reminds me of decorative label holders on antique oak file cabinets. This quilt just calls for a dive into the stash for options! It would also be a great one to use for exploring free motion quilting ideas to highlight various parts of the design. I'll look forward to seeing the completed quilt. Thanks as always for inspiration and energy! (janeherbst at roadrunner dot com)

  13. It seems strange but I see retro tvs with the cute little legs and antennas. Nice pattern.

  14. It reminds me of mosaic floor tiles in ancient cathedrals or mosques. But I love the Lavalier image, early 1900's style with filigree details. It's a great design. Have fun with it.

  15. Wow, everyone came up with such great ideas; I can't even think of anything to contribute. But now, I bet you're sorry you asked!! How are you ever going to decide now?!!

  16. It looks like a fun, scrappy pattern where the frame, center, and corner fabrics are rotary cut out of 3-4 fabrics at a time. Then the fabrics are interchanged. Great way to use up larger scraps or one-eighth fabric cuts. It's a winner!

  18. I see antique mirrors when I look at this quilt, not sure why, but that's what struck me. It's a very fun design, great for some of those larger print fabrics.
