Precarious

Happy Monday, friends!  It's week three on the Stash Statement blog hop, and this week's quilt is one of my favorites from the book! (you know I can't resist a rainbow)  It's the Precarious quilt, and in addition to being colorful and happy, this one is also deceptively quick and easy to put together.

I love the look of the sky when a rainbow is set against dark, ominous clouds.  When the sun peeks out in one direction, but the sky is still gloomy in the other, it just feels magical.  The double rainbow in the Precarious quilt is piled high, and it looks like it might topple over at any time!

The background of this quilt is Kona Medium Gray, and I quilted with an allover box stipple with 50 wt. Aurifil #2024, White.  I like how the boxy quilting echoes the improv piecing and carries it into the background of the quilt, and I love the slight contrast that the white thread adds to the darker gray.

I included a quarter in the photo for scale because this quilting is really dense (for me, anyway).  I used an entire large spool of thread on this lap size quilt, and the texture is really fantastic.

A rainbow backing pulled straight from my stash compliments the front of the quilt nicely, and the scrappy binding is an awesome contrast against the gray.

Think these scraps are too tiny for you?  Think again!  Stash Statement includes instructions for how to use larger scrap pieces, even when you need narrow quilt blocks.  Never fear; you'll be surprised at how easy it is!

Like all of the patterns in the book, this one is a winner when it comes to versatility.  Because you're using scraps, it's super easy to size these quilts up or down, or even change the colors to suit your own taste and stash.

Cameos and NTT

Happy Needle and Thread Thursday, friends!  I've been sewing up a storm this week and finished this quilt for my mother in law, who loves Fig Tree fabrics, and who snuggles on the couch with a quilt practically every night.  She also has my Strawberry Season quilt, but it's good to have a backup when one is in the wash!

With the blog tour for my book and a new Stash Statement quilt shown every Monday, I found it difficult to squeeze in a third blog post this week, so I didn't get a chance to show a process photo of this one.  It's made with the gorgeous Hazel and Plum collection, and these fabrics are going to look just perfect in their home.

This is just a snowball quilt, but instead of starting with squares, I cut my snowballs 4.5" x 8.5", and cut the corner squares at 2".  I had a fat eighth bundle of this collection, and I was able to get three complete snowballs from each print, with minimal waste.  The oval snowball shape, with these softer colors remind me of vintage cameo brooches, so I'm calling this one Cameos.

Since I used every bit of the fat eighth bundle, there were no scraps for the backing, but that's okay.  This apple green polkadot fabric matches well, and I added a stripe of this cool woodgrain fabric by Juliana Horner (Anna Maria's daughter!).  The warm maroon-brown color is so unique.  I actually bought the fabric for a different project last year, but since it's such a difficult color to find (and it was on sale), I decided to buy the rest of the bolt.  I'm glad I did, because it is the perfect complement for these Hazel and Plum fabrics.

I decided to bind the quilt in the same woodgrain print to create a rich, dark frame.  This quilt is already on its way to my mother in law, and I know she is going to love it!

Louvered

It's time for the second stop on the Stash Statement blog tour, and this week, it's all about the Louvered quilt.

With its more rustic colors, this quilt gives a nod to my Louisiana roots.  Brick red, mossy green, robin's egg blue, tan, and antique gold are common colors in French Quarter decor, and I designed this pattern to mimic the way light shines though the shutters that grace almost every building in the Big Easy.

The French Quarter is nothing if not lush, so I thought this quilt needed a quilting motif to fit the mood, and the floral pattern works so well.  I used Aurifil 40 wt. #2920, Light Brass, and it's subtle, but it stands out just enough against the Kona Bone background.

On the backing, I used two French General fabrics.  I didn't get a close up of the red fabric, but the print is actually tiny fleur de lis, and this tan floral from the Le Marais collection is just a perfect fit for the design, and even includes all of the colors.

These colors and fabrics are a little more on the traditional side, but even so, the improv piecing still looks fun and fresh.  It's a technique that really works for any style of scrap fabric you happen to have on hand!

Lindsey at Primrose Cottage Quilts and Diann at Little Penguin Quilts are today's stops on the blog tour.  They each took the Louvered pattern and modified it to make a smaller project.  Since the projects in the book are all scrappy, that's SO easy to do!

LuLu Lattice and NTT

Happy Needle and Thread Thursday, y'all!  Wow, it has been an exciting but busy week for me around here, and that includes finishing up my latest quilt, made with the LuLu Lane collection by Corey Yoder.

The colors in this quilt are so pretty.  They're muted but still feel fresh, and the shot of aqua helps it feel springy to me.  Since I'm a sucker for alliteration, I am calling this one LuLu Lattice.

On the backing, I used up all of the scraps, and paired it with an apple green polkadot, which really plays up the more vibrant tones in the collection, and the Kona Pool binding is such a happy frame for these fabrics.

This quilt is a gift, and I know it's going to make the recipient very happy!  In a week with posts for April CMM blocks as well as the Stash Statement blog tour kickoff and giveaway, last week's party seems like it was a long time ago (of course, it wasn't)!  Nevertheless, it was filled with awesome projects, and I definitely want to highlight a few.

Just look at this Postcards from Sweden quilt by Something Rosemade.  The colors are a little deeper than the ones I usually see, and it is just beautiful!

And oh my goodness!  Look at this hexie quilt top by Den syende himmel.  It contains 16,762 hexies!  By the way, she is Norwegian, but her blog is written in English too.

And this queen size quilt by Julie at Pink Doxies, made with Amy Butler's Hapi collection is gorgeous, and the layout is unique!

Stash Statement Kickoff and Giveaway!

After months and months of hard work and tons of secret sewing, it is officially time to kickoff the blog tour to celebrate the release of my new book, Stash Statement!  Because this time of year is so busy, the tour will span several weeks, featuring one quilt each week.  The very first quilt in the book is Grand Bazaar, and it's also the cover quilt!

The design of this quilt was inspired by hanging lanterns in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.  The improv piecing adds to the light illusion, and gives the lanterns an awesome twinkling effect.  The background fabric is Cloud 9 Cirrus Solid in Ash, and the soft gray adds to the look of lanterns shining at dusk.

I quilted with a fairly tight stipple with Aurifil 50 wt. Dove #2600, and though it adds plenty of crinkly texture, it doesn't compete with the design.

The backings of each quilt are not featured in the book, so I will definitely be showing them all during the tour.  For the back of the Grand Bazaar quilt, I decided to stick with the ornate theme and pull out my stash of Amy Butler prints.

Stash Statement is all about using your own scraps to make quilts with WOW factor!  The book covers three different (easy!!) methods of improv piecing, with virtually no waste, and the technique requires no extra cutting of your scraps to specific sizes.  Then, you'll take those pieced units and use them within twelve full, detailed quilt patterns!  It's the perfect blend of structure and play.  Whether your scraps are bright and modern, or softer and more traditional, they'll create gorgeous quilts, and I promise, this is doable for everyone.
