Treasures, News, and a Giveaway!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of spending the day with Janet from Simply Pieced.  As you may know, Janet and I live pretty close to each other and are in the same awesome MQG.  We try to get together every once in a while and we always have a blast.  Yesterday, we decided to have lunch, go to the antique mall, and of course, finish up with some fabric shopping.

Since I converted my dining room into my (much more useful) sewing studio this summer, I have been on the lookout for an antique ladder to display some of my quilts.  I even have the perfect place beside the window (and out of the sun).  I searched all summer long and could not find exactly what I was looking for, but yesterday, Janet and I hit the jackpot of quilty treasures.  Not only did I find my ladder, I ended up with a couple of other great finds as well.

Edited 9/15- Several of you have sent messages to me about protecting my quilts on the ladder from anything that may leech out of the wood.  Thanks so much for your concern, but don't worry, each quilt has a hand towel underneath it!  :)

You know, antique shops often have quilts (or unfinished quilt tops), but they are often threadbare, have a weird smell (or stains), or else they are in colors that just don't suit my style.  I completely respect the number of hours that have gone into the making of one of these quilts, it's just that I already have quilts coming out of my ears!  So, I don't always take the time to rummage through them.

Yesterday though, Janet and I looked at every single quilt in the whole antique mall, and she found this cute unfinished quilt top for only $9.50!  What a steal!

Janet has tons going on right now, so she didn't have time for it, so I snatched it up.  The fabrics are in good condition, with no stains, rips or smells, and the piecing is well done.  It was machine pieced, which actually I like, because that means I will have no qualms about finishing it on the machine.  Those hand pieced masterpieces deserve hand quilting and that's not happening (no hand quilting for me!)  Anyway, I digress.  This little quilt top measures about 32 inches square, so with a small border and a good washing, it will be a cute little boy preemie donation quilt.

I also came across this old sewing drawer, and it was ridiculously cheap as well.  I've decided to use it as a pretty place to keep my remote controls, a coaster, and anything else that usually sits on top of my sewing cabinet.  Anything to help battle the clutter that seems to gather on top of my workspace.

Yesterday was so much fun, and I could not be happier with all of my treasures.  It has been a super busy weekend in more than one way though, because I am also happy that I get to welcome Fort Worth Fabric Studio as my newest blog sponsor!

  2. about a year ago I found a little 15" crazy quilt in a consignment shop and it's hanging on my studio wall amid the modern minis. Love it!

  3. Absolutely. I was able to get a German quilt top for $10.00. Sad but true.

  4. I love the ladder--what a fun way to display your quilts! My favorite color combo these days has been coral and teal. Thanks for the giveaway.

  5. not a quilty treasure, but definitely a sewing one - an antique wooden dress pattern. This treasure was found in the bottom of an old trunk at an auction my dad and I went to. It is safely stashed in my cedar chest in my sewing room.

  6. Love to treasure hunt. My sewing table and hutch are from a yard sale.

  7. I haven't found any quilt treasures for the same reasons you have listed but am thrilled to see it can happen. I recently made a scrappy trip block in the color combo of this bundle and loved the combo. It would make an awesome quilt top. Thanks for the chance to win them.

  8. My favorite color combo these days is almost anything paired with gray. I just finished two baby boy quilts with turquoise, yellow and gray and am now starting a baby girl quilt with pink and gray. I have one waiting in the wings with hot pink, orange, yellow, green and gray.

  9. I wandered into an antique/junk store just down the block from where I work one day & found some pieces of my stoneware that went out of production about 30 years ago. I bought every piece they had - didn't care if they were duplicates. Thanks.

  10. I find that I am drawn towards the gray and yellow combos or turquoinand coral.

  11. Pretty fabric combo! I so love your quilt ladder idea - would be so much better for my quilts than in a pile on the floor under the end table!

  12. We don't have antique shops where I live, so I don't have that luxury or fun adventures because I know that I would love to check shops like these regularly!!! Love that cheery bundle and it would be such a welcome because we are having gray days lately that are cold and wet!! The only thing warming us is the heat from the woodstove!!

  13. I love Fort Worth Fabrics! Jodie is the best! :)

I haven't found any treasures while antiquing, but I did find an awesome portable sewing machine in the case at a garage sale. They pulled it out of the basement and opened it up to see what is was just as I walked by. It wasn't running well, but for the price they wanted I was willing to risk it. I oiled it up and it is running but still has issues with stitch length (as it no matter where you set the dial, they are still tiny) and I can't drop the feed dogs.Once I take it to the sewing machine hospital, though, I'm sure it will be fine!

  14. I have found some really beautiful treasures at antique shops, but they also had some expensive prices so I didn't get to bring them home with me. i love to go to estate sales and the last one was the best. There were tons of treasures there and I did manage to get a few. Thank you so much for the giveaway.

  17. I've never been much for antique shopping but now I want to check it out. So I guess I'll go with my favorite color combo which is shades of blue and grey.

  18. What great finds. I really love your ladder. Quilting is relatively uncommon over here in Europe, or at least traditional quilting seems to be, art quilting seems a while lot more popular, so I don't think I ever came across any quilty goodies while antiquing. I did however manage to find a lovely antique roll-front cabinet that is just perfect for storing my fabrics.

  19. Last year I found a 1920's doily holder. It was in such perfect condition and only cost me $15. I thought that was a good price anyway!

  25. That quilt top is such a steal! Last year, I was able to snag a vintage quilt that was in good condition for only $65. It's pineapple blocks and then a flying geese border. I love it, so I definitely think it was money well spent. But I agree... I definitely look and look and look for such great finds, but this is the only one so far.

  26. I love your ladder! I have been wanting one, too. I just started a quilt that is pink, red, green, and brown. Reminds me of Neapolitan ice cream!

  27. I love to antique with quilting items in mind. I have a couple of the sewing cabinet drawers with metal handles attached and I also use them in my sewing room. I have not ever splurged and bought any tops or antique quilts yet. You found some great things at reasonable prices--congrats! My favorite color combination right now is navy and orange. I think it is inspired by Bonnie and Camille's Miss Kate line. Thanks for the giveaway!

  28. I found a ladder at a estate sale but it wouldn't fit in the car ( should always take the truck to sales ). I let it go and curse myself.

  37. Wow, you found some great treasures and I love the ladder. I've been keeping my eye out for one but want a slightly modern looking one (think espresso finish) to go with our decor in a 6 month old house. I love the fabric bundles at Fort Worth. I'm not one to use just one line of fabric and prefer to mix and match. Even better when someone with a good eye for color does it for me!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love your antique ladder! That's something I'd love to find but until I do, I'm using the ladder for my son's bunk beds (since he's now in college!) It works, but an antique one would be better!

    ReplyDelete
  47. This fabric is fabulous! I found an old sewing machine drawer for cheap cheap once, and we use it for remote controls, too! I'm always on the lookout for old linens or vintage fabrics, but haven't been lucky so far.

  50. I found an antique needle display case used in stores at a hardware store in a small town. The owner sold it to me for $25.00. It still had full needle packets in it and looked like it was brand new as he had just stashed it high up on a counter over 60 years ago. A little dusty but in perfect shape and the needles are as sharp and shiny as the day they were put in it.

  51. I'm a new quilter so I LOVE the fabric bundles. It makes choosing fabric so easy. That's the hardest part for me. I love this idea of selling bundles that cross lines! That's super helpful to me. I can buy one of those bundles and kinda add to it. It "teaches" me how to get better at it! I'm going check out this shop right now! Thanks! And for right now my favorite color combo is Royal Blue and Orange. It's my daughters softball team colors so I am kinda stuck using it for awhile. lol I'd love to win this bundle! It's a nice break from the orange n blue. Hehe. Thanks for the chance to win!

  52. I haven't found any quilty treasures while out antiquing, but my hubby's grandmother (who is 94 years old) recently gave me two quilt blocks that she had made at least 49 years ago. They are needle-turn appliqué pieces and I can't wait to find some special way to use or display them. They are true treasures.

  53. Beautiful quilt display Kelly -- my sister snatched up two antique quilts for me last year at her annual 3 day antiquing event -- I love them both. I don't display mine as beautifully as yours -- but at least they are out. Thanks for the awesome giveaway -- great finds. I'm always on the look out for a featherweight -- and old hankies and lace.

  54. Congrats on your antique mall finds! I confess to only having gone to antique malls when dragged there by my mom. I guess I don't have the patience to look for that "diamond in the rough." My brother is a woodworker and made a seam ripper for me from wood from his father-in-law's property which is across the road from the one-room school we attended. That's better than any find in an antique store. I'm hoping he'll make me a ladder some day. That would be sweet. Thanks for the giveaway

  82. You had a perfect day all around - I love your quilts on that ladder. And how thoughtful of you to snatch up that quilt top to turn into a charity quilt :) The best find I've had is paying $10 for a large black bag of someone's stash fabrics at a yard sale. In fact, that is what got me going on my Pursuit of Fabric! Took me hours ironing it all out, lol.

  83. One day I stopped at a thrift shop to browse. Next thing I knew, my 8-year-old son was tugging on my arm and insisting we had to rescue a quilt because the shop wasn't treating it right. It was draped precariously across an old wooden trunk. So for $40 dollars we went home with a beautiful velvet crazy quilt with lots of wonderful hand embroidery on it. -- soparkaveataoldotcom

  98. Oh I love your ladder, that has been on my "get list" for some time. be careful of the acids in the wood getting on your gorgeous quilts. I've been told I need to put a liner between the two. I love going through antique stores and just a few days ago found an antique honey jar full of MOP buttons. Can't wait to use them in a crazy quilt. As for this fat quarter give away it would be perfect for #1 grand daughter. The colors fit her to a tee... Thanks to you and FWFS for a great give away. Phyllis

  113. I love rummaging thru "antique" shops. I have not had quilty luck, but I have an AMAZING collection of chenille spreads - amassed over a 25 year period. Unfortunately, I cannot do them justice any longer, and i am trying to figure out how best to sell them for others to enjoy!
I love FWFS - your are right, great service and fun bundles. I love these colors! Hope I win.

  114. You definitely were a winner on your antique finds. I can't imagine someone spending the time and money on such a cute quilt and then discarding it to the antique mall. The colors of the FWFS look yummy. Throw my name in the hat please. Thx.

I know someone who found a gorgeous scrappy quilt at the Goodwill for $9.95 and it was hand quilted. It was in great condition, no stains or tears. Thank you for a chance to win this cheerful and pretty fabric bundle.

  128. Many years ago, my mom gave me 2 drawers similar to the ones you found recently. They are wonderful for organizing and containing sewing notions next to my sewing machine. Love to look for sewing goodies at antique shops and stores like Goodwill.

  139. Thanks for this giveaway, I've never won anything yet, except a turkey when a teenager. But the best antique find I made was when I bought a big box of scraps from quilting and inside the bottom were 11 balls of old wool. I started using one ball and when I came to the end, I discovered someone had wrapped wool around $100 dollar bills to make the balls, I had a good time with that!! Cheers!
