Eclectic Vibe

I finished up my modern cross quilt, made with Anna Maria Horner's Pretty Potent line last night and I must say that it has grown on me.

I still won't say that this one ranks amongst my favorites, but a finished quilt always looks better than an unfinished one, and I'm glad that I persevered to get it done.

Something my mom said actually made me view this quilt in a different light.  She said that this quilt looks like something you would find in the store Anthropologie, and I agree with her.  If you've never been in an Anthropologie store, they have an eclectic mix of clothing, home decor, and kitchen and bath items.  Everything in the store has a handmade, funky vibe.  I don't go in that store often, and I don't love every single thing in it, but just thinking of this quilt in that light makes me like it better.  It's almost like appreciating the quilt for the unique style it is, rather than disliking it for something it's not.

On the back, I used up all of the scraps, and if you look closely, you'll even see a few scraps left over from my mom's Dowry quilt.  I love that muted shade of yellow, and I think it sets off the darker colors really well.  The pattern is so small that I almost consider it a solid, and I was happy to find a fabric that could add a little balance to the color and pattern.

When I was trying to come up with a name for this quilt, I kept thinking that the fabrics have an eclectic vibe, so I decided to call it just that!

With all of the busy pattern and bold color, I knew this quilt needed a solid binding, and the Kona Berry is a perfect match to the rich, raspberry shade in the quilt.

All in all, even though this quilt isn't one of my absolute favorites (they can't all be), I am accepting this quilt for it's unique style, and since I'm selling it anyway, I'm sure that someone will love it!

  4. It's not my normal color scheme and yet I really like how it turned out. The Anthropologie comparison is right on. Good name choice too.

  5. Hi Kelly I love the fabrics, the back and the really fab binding........it's just the wonky crosses!! I've seen this pattern on other quilts and I still don't get it!! Oh well it's just as well we don't all like the same things. But another great finish anyhow.

    1. I like that it has both a simple design and a complex pattern grouping. Very nice combination here. Julie @ pinkdoxies.blogspot.com

  11. Very nice job again! That yellow sits perfectly :) I'm working on a quilt now that is very loud (for my usual quilts). I'm not loving it or even liking it, but hopefully it will turn out ok! I'm using NO white this time. I told you I'd get brave one of these days lol! Great finish Kelly :)

  13. Well done the quilt looks lovely you made a great job of it, the back is just as lovely and the yellow is adorable and the binding the perfect finishing touch, just a quick question I adore your label what pen do you use? I've been sewing on the backs of mine with back stitch but this looks so much better. Quilty hugs

  14. I'm like you -- it doesn't make me giddy with delight, but the grape binding makes it much more pleasing to me. With purple included in anything, it's a "good thing". lol

  17. I think your Mum was right - it totally has an Anthropologie vibe. It's funny how different quilt patterns do different things to fabrics - it's one of the things I love about quilting. I really love how the back of the quilt came together and I love that you're a finisher and don't just let it sit gathering dust (I could do with being more like you!). Thanks for sharing :)

  18. I love that you aren't afraid to put bold patterns and colors together--I would have been too chicken and only used a couple fabrics from the line and mixed in a lot of less busy patterns/colors. I am kind of actually liking this finished quilt though-I really love the binding color.

P.S.--I received my package of winnings on Saturday from Forth Worth Fabric Studio--I love them and cannot wait to make something--Thanks again for the lovely giveaway!!

  20. I had a comparable experience with a quilt recently. It just wasn't "me" enough. I had decided from the get-go that I was going to donate it, so although it's not something I'd have in my own house, it was fun knowing that it was the perfect quilt for someone else out there. I especially love the back of your Eclectic Vibe -- that yellow changes the tenor of things, doesn't it?

  21. I had looked at these fabrics and thought, I like them but can't imagine how I would get a whole quilt to work. Well I think you have done it. I'm glad you finished it, and think your finishing touches have made a big difference, especially the binding, which I love.
