Welcome to Needle and Thread Thursday, my friends! My beloved Regina BERNINA is back home where she belongs, and has helped me crank out a brand new quilt top with an unusual color palette (for me). I decided to use my Tinkering pattern, which is one of my favorites. I love that the blocks go together so quickly, and since I'm trying to use stash, I wanted a pattern that does not use a solid background (since I don't think I have enough of a single fabric to use).
Quilting entirely from stash has forced me to really take a look at some creative ways to use what I have, and when I noticed that I had some taupe/beige/metallic gold fabrics languishing in my cabinet, I knew I needed to use them up. Most of these, along with a few more muted prints were leftover from my MidMod Diamonds quilt-
So, I felt like it made the most sense to use these as a starting point for my newest quilt. Of course, I had to supplement with additional prints, which is why there are more vibrant yellows, oranges, and turquoise prints thrown in the mix, but overall, the addition of the khaki/taupe keeps the same earthy vibe.
Y'all know I'm working on sewing up the leftovers into an awesome pieced back, but now that the Olympics have started, my time has been divided for sure.
And if you're wondering how all of this stash sewing is paying off, here's the progress-
That's it, y'all! My entire remaining print stash. Just for full disclosure, I do still have some solids left too, and I'm coming up with a plan for those. I also have a (very) small stash of sports team fabrics, and I'm not planning to clear those out. I like to keep those on hand in case someone wants a gift for a grad heading off to college. And I have a few Christmas prints, too. I'm holding onto those as well for small projects and gifts during the holidays.
Alrighty, friends! It's almost time to party, but before we do, let's check out the highlights from last week. This quilt from Gretchen's Little Corner is full of scrappy fun-
Deb at A Scrappy Quilter showed off TWO finished string tops-
And finally, Nancy at Grace and Peace Quilting shared this purple beauty. It was one of four projects she shared!
Okay, y'all. Let's party!
So what happens when you get the stash sewn down? Are you planning on stocking back up, pivoting to only purchasing for projects or something else?
ReplyDeleteYour stash use is so good. Your storage looks neatly arranged also. Both of your quilts on this post are beautiful, as are all of the others that are featured.
ReplyDeleteHooray for Regina Bernina’s safe return! As for that stash photo — SERIOUSLY?!! How is that even possible to be your entire stash of prints?! I think that writing books and teaching classes about scrappy improv and scrappy backings (and making all the samples that go along with that) have really paid off for you. But if you sew through your entire stash, you’re going to be like a brand new quilter just starting out who has to buy a bazillion charm packs to make a scrappy quilt. Unless we establish the Send Kelly Scraps Foundation and everyone who reads your blog fills a medium flat rate USPS box full of scraps so you can keep quilting…. ;-)
ReplyDeleteYour stash really is SMALL! I know I've made good progress at using-up (I'm actually tracking it on a spreadsheet), but I'm not close to where you are. I sure understand about not having enough yardage to use as background. I'm in the same boat, so have to look for designs that use everything, without a feature fabric. I really like the scrappy quilt made by Gretchen... those scrap strips are great! I never seem to have anything finished to share with a Linky, but I'll keep trying! Thanks for motivation!
ReplyDeleteWow, you are really whittling down your collection, Kelly! Great job and great quilts! Thanks for featuring the purple quilt from my blog, too!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for including my quilt this week.
