Easy and Quick, and NTT

Welcome to Needle and Thread Thursday, y'all!  Sometimes the best remedy for a lack in sewing motivation is just to jump in and DO IT.  Such is the case with my latest project.  I shared my latest fabric pull last week, and though I loved the fabrics, I was still having a hard time coming up with a pattern for them.  I found myself paralyzed between wanting to "do justice" to the beautiful fabrics and not wanting to expend the brain power to make something difficult or intricate.  After a few days, I decided to just choose something simple and get down to business.  Sometimes easy sewing for the sake of getting back into it after such a long creative break is exactly what's needed.

As it turns out, this simple block was a great choice.  There are enough bigger pieces to keep the large prints intact, but enough smaller pieces that it doesn't look too chunky.  I've always called these blocks window panes, but maybe they have another name?  Anyway, these blocks are all finished, and it won't take me long to press them and turn them into a quilt top.

Last week's party had lots of amazing links.  This beauty is from Pam's Applique Paintbox-

This mesmerizing quilt was shared by Rebecca Grace Quilting-

And finally, this cheery quilt is from Cynthia at Quilting is More Fun Than Housework-

Okie dokie, friends!  It's time for you to link up all of your awesomeness!

1You can link finished projects or WIP's , but just keep it about quilting and sewing!
2. Link to your specific post (not to your home page!) to make it easier for others.
3. Please remember to spread the word and post my button or a text link within your
    post.
4. Spread the comment love far and wide!
5. Following me is not a requirement to link, but is so very appreciated!

*If you're new to the party, here's a helpful tip for linking up- select "Auto Crop"  when selecting your thumbnail photo.  For some reason, trying to crop your own image results in the dreaded "white question mark box," and we definitely want to see your awesome work!  :)

  1. I bet it felt good to get some sewing done! I look forward to seeing how the blocks come together into the quilt top.

  2. Oh my gosh, Kelly, I am right there with you in the creative swamp of "I found myself paralyzed between wanting to "do justice" to the beautiful fabrics and not wanting to expend the brain power to make something difficult or intricate." I have a large scale print that has been in my stash for 16 years called "Inked". It's black background with tattooed women lounging around all over it and I bought it for my little sister when she was pregnant with my niece and my brother in law saw it and said NOOOOOO!!! so I made them a boring pink baby quilt instead. But my sister really likes that fabric (I knew she would, that's why I bought it in the first place) and every few years she asks me about making a quilt for her out of it. I have spent so much time considering and abandoning patterns for that fabric, knowing that if I don't like how it turns out there is no chance of finding more of a 16-year-old vintage OOP fabric. As for your block, I tried looking it up in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns. I didn't find it as a standalone block, but I did find it used as an alternate block in three different designs under Category 10: Unequal Nine Patch with Small Center Square. The earliest printed reference was a quilt called Pineapple from Woman's World (1931), then again in Nancy Cabot's Pineapple Squares (1937), and a third time in an early Quilters Newsletter Magazine called Happy Memories (1973). All three patterns combine your block with more complex pieced blocks made up of double 9-patch blocks or lots of little squares. Oh, and thanks for featuring the Lumen quilt that I quilted for Mary!

  3. I usually call them plus blocks but either way I love those fabrics!
