Clementine Baby Quilt

My wild thing spent the week at my parents' house last week, so they brought him back to us and visited this weekend.  After making my Posy quilt, I had several bits of fabric left over and I decided to turn them into a little baby quilt, and this project was the perfect thing to squeeze in before hosting out of town company.

I just love this fabric line, and since I had enough left over for another project, I just couldn't bear to put them into my scrap jars.  Besides, when I have lots of coordinating scraps at one time, turning them into baby and preemie quilts is one way that I keep them from completely taking over my studio.

I found this awesomely bright Denyse Schmidt polkadot for the backing.  It's hard to tell in this photo, but the polkadots are outlined in dark green to really make them pop against the lemon yellow; and the turquoise tonal polkadot binding frames it nicely.  I'm not sure you can ever have too many polkadots!  This little quilt measures right at 42 inches square, and is destined for my cousin, who has a baby girl due later this year.

After making this quilt, I only had four scrap pieces to put into my jars.  That feels like a victory to me!  Of course, I can't always use every single piece of fabric, and every summer, I purge my scrap jars with quilts like my Shattered Rainbow and Kitchen Sink.

So, what's your system for keeping your scraps in check?  Do you prefer to hold onto them until you have enough for a bigger project, or do you use them on smaller projects along the way like I do?  Do you like to work on leader-ender projects or tackle them all at once?  I know everyone works differently, and I would love to hear!

  1. I tend to save my scraps cutting them in squares and placing in boxes - I use them for scrappy quilts

  2. This is an adorable baby quilt and I love how you used up pieces from other projects. I do that occasionally and I have been working hard to cut my scraps into usable pieces. I have drawers that I keep precut sizes in and have used those for leader ender projects. A couple years ago I gave away my huge bin of scraps to 3 other quilters. Yes, garbage bags of scraps, it really is a large bin. I'm trying not to let it get that full again. I sew a lot of squares into charity child quilts. Your color choices are so fun!

  3. Awesome quilt! Wowzas you work quickly! Right now I am sorting my scraps using the idea from Sunday Morning Quilts. I'm using the scraps to make colorized fabric bins to put future scraps into. I tend to buy way to many multi colored fabrics though and they are making me scratch my head.

  5. This quilt is so pretty! I love your method for keeping your scraps under control. So far, mine just sit and look at me. I'm still nervous to put them all together :)

  6. So far I've just been putting scraps in my scrap bins, but I have made a scrappy pouch with them and have been making scrappy slabs that I hope to turn into a quilt when I have enough! If I had enough fabric, I like the idea of making baby quilts along the way.

  8. This is a great quilt Kelly that doesn't scream baby because of the colors - I love it! So far I've only used my scraps on small projects like a zipper pouch. The thought of making something bigger is daunting to me - even though it's a scrap project I still want it to look cohesive and somewhat planned. Can you tell I have a bit of an OCD side? :)

  12. The quilt is so cheerful! Thanks for sharing! My scraps are in shoe-box sized clear plastic bins/boxes, sorted by color, with a couple of extra bins for unused precuts from classes and unused sashing, binding & flanges. Unused fabric isn't a "scrap" until it's less than a few inches square. Any piece larger than that it goes back into the bins that hold the rest of the fabric, sorted by color, and then further sorted by type (marble, batik, reads-like-solid, etc). By keeping the scraps sorted in the small bins I can easily find small pieces when needed, including, for example, a quick one-off crazy-patch table-topper for a last-minute gift, and hand-printed label, ...

  15. I love this quilt because my name is Clementine!
I've been terrible with my scraps though - throwing way too much out. I keep them now though, in boxes. Handy for small projects (mug rugs, crazy patchwork). I love your scrap busters though! I think QAYG would work well on them.
