I decided that Girl's Best Friend was just too perfect a name to pass up for this one. Every time I look at this quilt, I see a diamond set with prongs. I didn't really plan it that way; it was just a happy occurrence!
As I mentioned in my last post, I really enjoyed creating this pattern, but the only thing I might have done differently is to make the blocks smaller. These are 20 inch blocks, made with 5 inch segments. I love the crown shape created by the white space between the diamonds, but I think it might look better if it was a little less expansive. I do love the big chunks of the Vintage Modern fabric though! I guess I can't have it both ways.
Of course, I used up the scraps in the backing, and added a Riley Blake aqua dot, along with a really beautiful gray fabric I found at Joann's. I think I like the backing as much as the front! I de-stressed from all of the holiday mayhem by meander quilting.
I also found this sketch texture fabric in the perfect shade of red to use as the binding. Reds are so difficult to match, so I snatched this one right up!
Woohoo! My first finish of 2014! (Even though I posted about it just last week, I actually finished Lilacs and Sunshine before Christmas)
Because the weather is so bitter and school is out (Tennessee is just not prepared for weather like this and many students don't own adequate outerwear), I have thoroughly enjoyed sleeping in, hanging out in my thermals and slippers, drinking hot chocolate, and cutting into these-
Oh yes... I can't wait! I got these from Fabric Ala Carte, a shop I only recently discovered. They have a great selection of beautiful fabric bundles (FQ's, half yards, and full yard bundles!), yardage, and a clearance section with fantastic deals.
I am so happy to welcome them as a new sponsor! Check out the button below, or on my left sidebar!
Fabric Ala Carte's 5th anniversary is next week, and Kris is offering free shipping on any US purchase $30 or more. International buyers can contact Kris for an 18% discount. To take advantage of these offers, use the coupon code 5thAnniversary! Happy shopping, and stay warm friends!
This is a delightful quilt, Kelly - lovely fresh colours which are perfect to rest the eyes on at this dreary time of the year ... made me smile :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love the vintage modern collection. I have some of that myself. Do you know what kind of gray you got from Joann's I am looking for a gray to go with it for a project I would like to make with it:)
ReplyDeleteYour quilt turned out great! I'm glad to hear you are using your "cold day" well while the rest of us with appropriate winter clothes had to go to work. Boo!!!! It was hard getting up this morning while the rest of my house slept in.
ReplyDeleteLovely!!! I adore this pattern!
ReplyDeleteThat really is a lovely quilt! And knowing they are 20 inch blocks makes me realize it is a much bigger quilt than I would've thought (I mean after all it's "only" nine blocks!) LOL. On a smaller scale that pattern would make a really wonderful baby quilt!
ReplyDelete(Our schools have been on 2 hour delayed start this week, but I couldn't talk my employer in to following their lead)
Love the quilt, it turned out beautifully!! And I'm going to check out "Fabric Ala Carte" now. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteNice quilt! I'm impressed as usual!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your new fabric. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
Beautiful finish! And that bundle of fabric is really yummy! :-)
ReplyDeleteScrumptious stashing and your quilt is so very bright and happy! Lovely work!
ReplyDeleteI love your new design, Kelly! Congrats on such a fabulous look! You did those lovely fabrics justice. I hear you on the matching of reds. Purples are difficult that way too. Thanks for joining in the Let's Bee Social linky party at Sew Fresh Quilts!
ReplyDeleteI really like the back of your quilt. I just learned about doing pieced backs this summer and have only done one so far, but I hope to do more in the future.
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt! The colors are so fresh and pretty.
ReplyDeleteIt came out beautifully Kelly! Woohoo!
ReplyDeleteLooks great!
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt! We lived in TN before moving to ME. We were just there for the super warm winter a few years back, but seems like your temps are matching ours this week!

ReplyDeleteI love the colours and the design! It's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI love the back as much as the front. I find reds are so tricky to work with, so well done finding that sketch fabric for the binding to match!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty quilt! I was wondering - when you are adding to your stash do you usually buy yardage, 1/2 yard combo packs or another form?
ReplyDeleteThat's a super cute quilt! And hooray for another sponsor!
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt-and I agree a perfect name too-its been really cold here in Missouri too-but finally a warm up this week
