Another Monster Quilt

I finished the quilt top yesterday for the friend who loved my Hopscotch quilt, but wanted a queen sized one.  This one is not exactly the same, but is pretty similar.

With a little more orange than Hopscotch and no navy at all, the overall effect is that the quilt is brighter.  I like it a lot and I hope they do too!  In person, the quilt does actually have a lot of blue in it, but for some reason in the picture, the oranges and greens are really jumping out.

I'm working on quilting it right now, and every time I quilt one this big I just feel like I'm drowning in quilt.  This one is 80x100.  No matter how much table space I have set up, I never feel like it is quite enough.  Of course, it's always these big ones that I'm the proudest of.  Even still, it feels a little bit weird to do two such similar quilts with so many of the same fabrics back to back.

How about you?  Do you like to repeat designs or colors or do you always try to do something different each time?

  2. This turned out awesome! I can't wait to see it all quilted up. I have the hardest time getting big quilts through my machine. Anything bigger than 50x50 has to be sent out to be longarmed. Hopefully someday soon I can upgrade to a bigger machine:)

  4. I love the quilt. It's huge. Most of quilts are queen. My first husband told me that if he didn't go shopping with me that all my clothes would be navy and sailor. Blue is my favorite color. I do have more pink now that I'm a breast cancer survivor. Are you going to try to machine quilt that monster? Great job! Thanks for postiing.

  5. I think some quilts are worth repeating. I find that I enjoy quilting large quilts as long as I only focus on a small area at a time.

  6. Wow that is very impressive. I don't mind doing them back to back as long as I like the colors I am working with and as long as they aren't exactly the same fabrics. It has to be inspiring or it will feel like a chore. I can't wait to see how this finishes up! Thanks for sharing.

  9. I love this quilt. I still cannot believe how well all of those colors come together. Kudos to you for being able to quilt it on your home machine---I really wish I can get that figured out one of these days :) I have done two quilt patterns twice, each time with different fabrics for a completely different look. And I have done a couple of John Deere quilts and Farmall quilts, but they were each created based on the fabric I had, so they all turned out completely different as well. I think there are too many ideas and things I want to try and that keeps me from being repetitive and getting bored. But if someone specifically requested something that was a repeat in either pattern or color scheme, I'd certainly do it.

  10. Oooo girl, this is a biggie! I did one queen size and decided it would be a while before I did that again. I did hand quilt it though. Machine quilting may have scarred me less, ha ha! I have remade a design, but new is always more fun:)

  11. Looks great! I love how the quilt works with the large prints, not an easy thing to do.

  12. Beautiful quilt! It isn't impossible to quilt large quilts on your domestic. I did a king size and several queen size quilts. it is hard work though! You could section it and do it as a QAYG if you haven't already begun quilting it! Marti Mitchell has a book Machine Quilting in Sections. It s a great book for us who quilt on our domestic machines. Your quilt top could easily be sectioned into 2 or 4 sections for ease. Anyways it is a beauty since you have great talent in fabric and color coordination!

  13. It looks beautiful!! Can't wait to see it all quilted. I don't mind using the same design, but with different prints or colors.
I really need to pull out my queen size quilt-top and baste it. This will be my first quilt larger than a lap-sized one. Thank you so much for the inspiration :)

  14. This looks great! I'm curious how you'll quilt it in the end!

  15. Absolutely beautiful. I must admit I have no patience for repeating things so rarely use the same deign more than once and am much more of a fan of big block quilts rather than those that require me to make lots and lots of smaller blocks.

  16. Gorgeous quilt!!! I like so many different things that I seldom repeat patterns. And I'm real big into scrap quilts so most of my quilts have a huge variety of fabrics in them.

  17. 80x100 I think the biggest I have done was 90x90. I can relate;) Never enough table space.

The blues and oranges and really all of the colors are brilliantly paired!

  21. Don't think I'd try anything this big on my machine! I love my Bernina but the throat is tiny! This quilt is bright and pretty and I'm sure you will be pleased with it when it's all done.

  22. Very nice quilt. I don't like repeating things so usually only make one of any design. Good luck with the quilting. 80 x 80 is the biggest I've quilted on my machine and I found it very tiring but so worth while. a great sense of achievement when it was done.

  23. Neat quilt Kelly and yes, I love repeating things. I can make the same runner or quilt and still enjoy it. That is a big one to quilt.....just think of the muscles you are building in your arms! Thanks for sharing.

  24. This quilt looks quite different thanks to the change in colours, it's beautiful. I find it very hard to repeat things, I really have to force myself to do it!

  25. I made a king-sized quilt for our bed early in my quilting journey. It is 120" x 130"! I ended up buying a Grace quilt frame in the largest size so I could quilt it with my home machine. It worked, but I ended up doing the borders off the frame. That quilt was so hard to maneuver, but I love it and it is great to sleep under.

  26. colorful quilt, large quilt. I usually like to use the pattern again but put a different spin on it. Different layout and different colors.

  27. Amazing, Kelly! You are a wonder. These colors are so cheery and modern, I can see them looking perfect in a mostly-white bedroom (hmm, maybe this is the kind of quilt I need to be making for my bed...) I see the finish a couple of posts up, and it looks amazing with its blue binding. Happy Thanksgiving to you! Be safe in your travels.
