The weather around here finally dried out today, and chilly temperatures followed right behind the rain. The rain and wind also cleared lots of the leaves off of the trees. Although my husband dreads all of the raking that will inevitably come when the five gigantic red oaks in our yard finish dropping their leaves, I like the distinctly autumn look that it gives the pictures of this quilt.
This quilt is one that has grown on me as I've worked on it. When I first pulled the fabrics for this quilt, I purposely went with a palette that was a little bit clashy, and when I put the blocks together, I wasn't even sure I liked them at all. Once you've got 25 blocks finished though, it's "in for a penny, in for a pound," and you just plow forward (or I do anyway).
I'm really glad I did, too. Now that it's finished, I think the bright colors of this quilt are really fun, and since it's completely un-floral, it's gender neutral. I think I even like the back of this one as well as the front.
The fun colors and squares made me think of the brightly colored hopscotch squares that my students love to make with sidewalk chalk. Last year particularly, I had some very artistic girls that enjoyed creatively coloring them during recess. So, Hopscotch seemed to be a perfect fit for the name. The finished quilt measures 50 x 50 inches.
