Blossoms and Buds, and NTT

Happy Needle and Thursday, y'all!  I'm delighted to share my finished quilt with you today, and though the pattern doesn't take center stage (you can read more about my thoughts on that HERE), this quilt is still beautiful.  With these luscious Anna Maria fabrics, how could it not be?

Because these prints are so large and the quilt is a bit busy, I just quilted this one with a nice, easy stipple.  It adds plenty of crinkly texture, and doesn't add any extra pattern to the mix.

On this quilt, I also used my very favorite backing trick.  When I'm buying all new fabric for a quilt rather than using my stash, I find sometimes that half-yards are the smallest cut that some quilt shops will cut.  In that case, I always cut two fat quarters from each half yard, using one for the front of the quilt, and reserving the other one for a pieced backing.  For this quilt, I cut each "leftover" fat quarter down to 18" square, and was able to fit all sixteen prints on the back side.  It really is a lovely mix of fabrics.

Cutting the 18" squares from each backing fat quarter also give me a nice little strip for a scrappy binding.

As I mentioned in my post a couple of weeks ago, I will likely remake this quilt with different fabrics that will show off the actual pattern a little better.  Since I don't particularly enjoy remakes, that will probably wait a few months though.  I'm calling this one Blossoms and Buds. The primary shape of the blocks creates the "blossom," and the "buds" come together in the secondary pattern.

There were so many beautiful projects linked up last week.  Take a look at this stunner by Yvonne at Quilting Jetgirl (gorgeous against all that snow!)

This pretty quilt is from Brenda at Songbird Designs-

Sew Yummy shared this fresh, springy quilt top-

And finally, Kris at Sew Sunshine showed off this beauty-

Y'all make it so difficult to choose highlights!  There are always so many lovely things linked up!  So, let's do this!

1You can link finished projects or WIP's , but just keep it about quilting and sewing!
2. Link to your specific post (not to your home page!) to make it easier for others.
3. Please remember to spread the word and post my button or a text link within your
    post.
4. Spread the comment love far and wide!
5. Following me is not a requirement to link, but is so very appreciated!

*If you're new to the party, here's a helpful tip for linking up- select "Auto Crop"  when selecting your thumbnail photo.  For some reason, trying to crop your own image results in the dreaded "white question mark box," and we definitely want to see your awesome work!  :)

  1. Great method for the backing. I might be too weak to use the extra matching fabric on the back? would it be happier sitting in my stash?? LOL Your quilt is luscious!

  2. Thank you so much for sharing my improv quilt from last week. Thankfully almost all of our snow here has melted (except for what lingers in the shadows). Great tip for cutting 1/2 yards into 2 fat quarters and the use of the extra pieces for your backing turned out beautifully. :)

  3. Such a fun, cheerful quilt! And your backing strategy is such a cool idea.

  4. Kelly, I like what you did with your AMH prints. I won an 18 fat quarter bundle of AHM prints at QuiltCon, during a MQG Leadership "Mix and Mingle" hosted by FreeSpirit. I've never been a fan of florals, so t will be a challenge for me to use these in a quilt! My goodness Yvonne, but your quilt is gorgeous! Love those bright colors, and the weight of the blues toward the bottom. Of course your photo site is a beautiful backdrop. I think, seeing a picture like that, is the ONLY time I ever miss living in a cold climate. And even when I did, I never ventured outdoors with a quilt to take pictures! Give me palm trees all the time. :-)
