The Bento Box Quilt That Wasn't

I finished the top of my bento box quilt this afternoon.

So here's the thing-  I actually really like this quilt.  That being said, despite the fact that it is technically a bento box pattern, it doesn't really look like one to me.  The cool thing about bento box quilts is the effect that is created when the contrasting parts of the box are put together.  There are some parts of it that have that neat contrast, but other parts that look more muddled.

Again, I do like the ultra modern feel of the quilt, but I think these fabrics, although they are all individually beautiful, are just a little too busy to allow the bento box pattern to really show up well.  What do you think?

  1. I am not familiar with the pattern but I'm not sure anything made with yellows and grays could ever be a fail! Maybe you'll like it better in the morning!

  2. I think you are right that the fabrics don't allow for the bento box pattern to show. I do love the quilt though. It's still very appealing!

  3. HAHA! I love it. Often I find that the movement in a Bento is too much for my eyes and this one seems calmer. I prefer this!!!

  4. Well...I like it. I like the moderness and the business. What type of borders, if any, are you adding? I think you are far to critical of yourself.

  5. It doesn't scream Bento Box to me either but it is downright lovely! So, who cares?

  6. Like Katy said... Who cares? It is a wonderful quilt! Sometimes we get something more beautiful than we thought we would!

  8. I have never made a Bento. Your top is sweet, but I have to agree with your opinion. I wonder if using one or two solids throughout the blocks, alternating the position, would have helped to provide more distinction of the blocks. Do you know what I mean?

  9. I agree that some of the blocks don't have a lot of contrast, but I think it's gorgeous! Very soothing colour combo.

  10. I don't think it does either, however, I really like the scrapiness of it and think it still looks beautiful.

  11. I love the fabrics, but can't really see the bento box pattern in it. It still looks nice, and you will have a lovely quilt finished! You're so speedy I'm jealous!!!

  12. I'm a new quilter, so I'm not familiar with the pattern. However, I agree that the busyness of some of the fabrics does detract from the overall pattern. (A lesson I think I'll probably learn many times on my own!) That said, I do think it's a nice quilt. I hope you'll enjoy it!

  13. You're right about the bento pattern not showing up, it's definitely a "lack of fabric contrast" issue. But it's still a fantastic top, with gorgeous colours and is going to be a fabulous quilt!

  14. It might be less 'Bento' than you intended, but it's gorgeous!!! This one is my favorite so far. Love it!

  16. Definitely a great quilt, but I know what you mean. Sometimes that happens to me too, especially when I use a line of fabric. Don't always have enough of certain values to get what I need in the contrast dept. Love it though! Another fabulous creation:)

  17. I love it! I really like how the bento box gets lost in the subtle contrast. I actually like it better than traditional boxy versions.

  18. It's a great quilt as it is. To make a Bento box show up more, you could use 2 and 2 of matching squares in each 4-patch block rather than as you have set these. This is too pretty to change. Try it on the next one!

  20. I think I am blown away by how fast you work! I agree with you that it doesn't look like a traditional bento box but I think that is what I like best about it (besides the color scheme). It looks so wonderfully spontaneous~

  21. I think this is a great quilt and a very cool pattern. I think we all know what it's like to second guess things. For me I think it may have worked better if not for the white. The white is hard for me to look away from. If it were a mores blended color then I think it would not make the other things appear muddled, they would just be a very brown/gray color palate. I think the other colors are made to seem muddled due to their stark contrast to the white. But I'm just a beginner what do I know? Well I do know I appreciate constructive criticism when it is asked for (which is what I felt you were doing). Love your blog!!

  22. I agree with all who say the Bento Box doesn't come through, but the quilt is great. Just give it a new name like so many old quilt patterns have. It is hard to keep up with the various names for the same grouping of shapes in different color combinations. and I got my book today; thanks!
