I cut my squares at 11 inches, and my strips 2-3 inches wide, so my finished blocks are 12 inches, giving me a perfect throw size.
*excuse the dead flower in the background. I didn't even notice it until just now! ;)
I worried that so much brown would look heavy, but I think the wonky cross pattern keeps it looking pretty hip and not stuffy, and the pale blue lightens it up too.
I quilted it with brown thread, and used a Kona Chocolate binding. There is so much busy pattern, (especially on the back), that I thought it needed a solid somewhere. Of course all that pattern didn't stop me from using the scraps in the backing!
I've added that little off centered stripe of scraps to lots of my quilts lately and I really think it makes the back more interesting. Part of me thinks I should try something different, and part of me is like- eh, what the heck! It uses up my scraps and I like it, so I'll keep doing it. I guess maybe one day I'll venture out and do something new on the backing...but just not today.
As I mentioned in my last post, this quilt is a gift, and the color palette matches the decor of the recipient. I hope she thinks it's just heavenly (sorry, I couldn't help it)!
Nice! I love that colour combo. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's such a lovely colour combination. And you are right, the wonky makes it really work. I love your pieced backings, I do that myself to use up scraps and various fabric pieces. Makes an interesting back, such a surprise when people turn it over. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteI've been doing that off-center stripe lately too. I am thinking about maybe running it horizontally for variation next time? but really I love it as a scrap-user, like you said, and a backing-fabric stretcher. You are right, the light blue airs the brown right out and this looks very light and sweet! Great job.
ReplyDeleteKelly I just love it! Great job...
ReplyDeleteI have some of those fabrics in a stack ready to be made into something. I'm looking for the right pattern. I really like how this turned out, so I'll be pinning this for inspiration.
ReplyDeletegorgeous!

ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorite blocks and I just love your version!
ReplyDeletelove this quilt! And, the off-centre strip on the back is great--I've really started liking that sort of addition to quilt backs :)
ReplyDeleteThe name is perfect for this one. And you have the right balance of blue and brown. Really lovely Kelly!
ReplyDeleteI am amking one similar to this now! You inspire me to get busy!
ReplyDeleteLove the name. Wonderful quilt!
ReplyDeleteOooh, love it! I love the scrappy strip in the backing. Just perfect!
ReplyDeleteI love the color combo. I've always been a fan of brown as an accent color. My son's nursery was done in chocolate, cream, and mint green (If I had a girl I was going to swap out the green for pink). I'd wanted my bedroom to be chocolate and tiffany blue but my husband wasn't a fan. :( Maybe I'll make a small quilt with those colors and see if I can win him over.
ReplyDeleteVery nice Kelly, I quite like the blue and browns, and yes, that is the perfect name
ReplyDeleteThe blue looks great, I'm not a big fan of brown but I really like how it works with the blue in this. She's goign to love it!

ReplyDeleteLove these wonky crosses. I like your backs a lot so don't mess with success as they say:) Another fab finish!
ReplyDeleteI love your version of a wonky cross quilt! Isn't it fun to not have to be so precise with each block?! I find it very relaxing :)
ReplyDeleteOh, fun! Almost all of my quilts backs look like that. My husband calls it my signature move, haha. I tell him it's just really convenient and adds some fun to the backing! :) Love it!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great. I cannot imagine completing a quilt in just a few days - you are amazing!
ReplyDeleteI'm not normally a fan of brown, but you've paired it so beautifully with the pale blue. Love it!
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt. I am sure the recipient with love it. Brown and bright blue is such a classic combo! Very sophisticated! :-)

It's fantasmalicious! Who says you can't use brown in a quilt? I always hear that! I'm curious is the writing on the label is with thread or a pen? If a pen, what kind?
ReplyDeletevery nice....what is the name of te block?
